New into the shop this week is the fantastic Summer Cooler presse (cucumber, mint and geranium) from Belvoir Fruit Farms, Grantham. Uncle Henry’s Open Farm Sunday was a huge success raising £583.40 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice and pig racing being the true highlight of the day!
Although the day started on a wet note, the clouds cleared and it stayed dry for us all day.
The pigs got everyone cheering with pig rocket being the clear winner, and the interactove tractor and trailer rides had children and adults amazed with all the machinery we had on show, but our bright yellow combine won on scale, noise and wow factor!
Ricardo Ravenelli was the winner of the ‘Guess the Weight of our New Tractors’ Competiton. Mr Hewitt, Kim Hodgson, Jennifer Lawson and Mandy Quinn also got it right at 22 tonnes for all three tractors but Ricardo’s name was picked out of a hat by Meryl Ward. He took home a pair of John Deere overalls.
Lindsey Lodge had a great day raising money for their hospice, and all the visitors gave so kindly to the charity.
All that is left to say is a big Thank You to everyone that came and see you next year on Sunday 7th June!!

The CLA in association with Knight Frank has announced the regional winner of the Best Building Conversion category of the prestigious CLA Buildings awards.

Regional Winner of the Best Conversion is Uncle Henry’s Farm Shop.
In the centre of a working commercial arable and pig farm Uncle Henry’s represents rural diversification in its truest sense. The redundant traditional livestock buildings in the centre of the farm have been transformed into a superb farm shop, cafe, conference facilties and commercial kitchen.
Announcing the awards Helen Woolley CLA Regional Director said that ‘the conversion represents a perfect marriage between old and new. Built with the traditional Lincolnshire limestone and beamed ceilings, the buildings incorporate a modern interior’.
James Way from Knight Frank, one of the panel of judges, commented ‘Uncle Henry’s is a thriving business, benefiting the wider rural community in the locality as an outlet for their high quality produce. The project provides considerable local employment and incorporates expanding plans for educational oppurtunities for school parties to learn about agriculture and conservation’.
He continued ‘The winners of this award and other entrants have shown great passion and determination, often in the face of a difficult agricultural environment, to find new, ambitious uses for redundant buildings and assets and have used their intiative and drive to achieve a new or added dimension to their businesses.’
On recieving the award Meryl Ward said ‘we are delighted that the combined efforts of the archtiectural, design and building team have been recognised by this award and are extremely proud of the way they have delivered our vision for a sensational shop and education facility. They have managed to create the ‘wow’ factor whilst retaining the rural ambience. We would like to thank all the individuals who were involved in the process from the East Midlands Development gency, the West Lindsey planning team and the craftsmen on site.’

BBC Look North came along to Uncle Henry’s this week to investigate the future of the Lincolnshire Sausage!
Uncle Henry’s was the location of a news piece on the threat of the Lincolnshire sausage yesterday. Meryl, Lousie our butcher, Linda our cook and Stuart our visiting butcher aswell as our pigs all became local celebrities as they appeared on our screen on the 6.30 pm news on Wednesday.
Look North were looking into the difficulties surrounding pig farmers like Meryl in the area, and the impaxct it may have on our famous Lincolnshire sausage. The film crew were impressed with the store, and cafe but found asking the pigs to stand still for more than a few seconds an extremely difficult task!
Meryl also appeared on the BBC Ten o’clock national news last Friday, discussing the role that supermarkets have on prices in the farming industry! They visited our pig farm, Uncle Henry’s and sampled our cafe menu, learning all about pig farming in Lincolnshire.
Go online to the BBC website and watch it again, to catch Meryl, Uncle Henry’s staff and our pigs!

The farm is busy lifting potatoes at the moment, but with all the wet weather we have had it isn’t an easy job! Today they are lifting King Edwards on the field down the drive to Uncle Henry’s so come along and see how Paul, our farm manager lifts those King Ed’s!
We are still suffering some movement restrictions due to the foot and mouth outbreak, but don’t worry there is still plenty of pork for the shop, and Louise our butcher has plenty of meat to make our suasages!

Uncle Henry’s First Birthday celebrations exceeded expectations with record numbers of people visiting the shop and cafe.
The day was a huge success, even though it was rather windy for our poor stall holders! The cafe was busy, the shopping baskets were full, and Henry’s Big BBQ wasn’t so big for very long as we sold all our burgers!
Uncle Henry’s saw lots old and new faces who came to celebrate our first year of being open, meet the farmer was popular as ever and the scare crow competiton made the farm look even better if not slightly creepy!
The winner of the scare crow competion was Chloe, aged 6 from Scunthorpe. Chloe has won an Uncle Henry’s goody bag full of farm staionary and pretty stickers which is on its way to her now!
I would like to thank all the stall holders that came along and braved the fierce winds, giving visitors a taste of whats best in Lincolnshire. I would also like to thank all the Uncle Henry’s staff that worked so hard up too and on the day to make it so successful, we couldn’t have done it without you, but most of all I would like to thank all the visitors that came and celebrated our first Birthday with us, we hope you enjoyed the day and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

Uncle Henry’s are keen to promote that the countryside is still open and that the farming industry needs the nations support more than ever, so come along and celebrate Uncle Henry’s First Birthday but more importantly support British Farming and the countryside.

There is only 5 days left now until the famers market, and Uncle Henry’s First Birthday and we are busy putting the finishing touches to the celebrations!
Julie, our cafe manager, put on a scare crow competition in her village of Glentworth last weekend, and is kindly bringing some of the competitors scare crows to Uncle Henry’s in time for the big day so visitors can come and have a look and see which one they think is best!
A competition will be running for children under 15 years of age to choose which one they think looks the best. The one with the most votes will be announced here on the blog later on next week whilst the names of the people who voted will be placed in a hat and Julie will pick a name out of the hat and they will win a Uncle Henry’s Special Prize!

After nearly a year of being open Uncle Henry’s has decided to set up a blog for everyone to hear about whats going on down at the store!
My name is Frances (or Fran) and if you have visited us at the shop in the last month, you may have seen me about. I am a new member of staff, and have joined Uncle Henry’s for a year. I am currently studying at Harper Adams University College, and as part of my course, in my third year I head off on placement to gain valued experience, and for my placement I am here at Uncle Henry’s.
My main role is to get more events arranged at the shop, but as well as that I am also here to help in the shop and cafe, and from today, I am here to keep you upto date on whats going on at Uncle Henry’s!
I joined Uncle Henry’s on 2nd July, I have worked in the shop, understanding the stock, and getting to grips with the till (which I still haven’t quite mastered). I have worked in the cafe, serving drinks and food, used the coffee machine and tryed to get the milk to froth for those all important cappuccino’s, mocha’s and latte’s! I have washed up in the kitchen, wrapped our famous homemade cakes and worked upstairs in the office. My experience so far has been challenging, hard work but most of all great fun!
My new challenge for the next few weeks is to arrange a fun packed and successful event to celebrate our first year of being open. Our Birthday is on the 16th September and to celebrate I am planning a farmers market to be held at the store! Stall holders will comprise of as many of our suppliers and producers as possible, to give the customer an insight into all the people involved in the products that we sell in store! There will be tasters for you to try, our big Uncle Henry’s BBQ, including our home reared pork sausages and burgers, a chance to meet the farmer and ask him questions and understand more about farming and the countryside, as well as the chance to use our farm trail which will be open for you to go around and learn more about Uncle Henry’s farm! I hope that you will come along and celebrate our first Birthday with us!
Uncle Henry’s News
-
With all this wet weather we have had and the lack of a decent summer it has meant that combining has stopped and Paul our Farm Manager is walking around even grumpier than normal!
-
Uncle Henry’s has a new member of staff. You may have been served by Sheila in the shop in the last few months, and her youngest son, Ashley, has just arrived back from Australia and has joined our cafe team (unfortunatley not bringing the ozzie weather with him!) He started on Friday and is doing really well, and is a wizz on the coffee machine already!
-
We are also planning to launch our new and improved cafe menu soon, including more gluten free products ! It has taken quite a while to get it right and we hope you find it even tastier than our present menu but dont worry, our yummy cakes and delicious quiches aren’t going anywhere!
-
An exclusive for you is that the staff of Uncle Henry’s are thinking of having a revamp, and changing the uniform! We are still undecided on what colour we think suits us all best, Julie, our cafe manager wants as brighter colour as possible to get noticed, whilst I’m thinking black would look better and make me look slimmer which scores highly on my wish list! If you have any suggestions please email me (my contact inforamation is on the bottom of the screen)
-
I am also now taking bookings for the Christmas period, (I know it seems a while off yet but we do get booked up and we dont want you to loose out on the oppurtunity to celebrate the Christmas period with us) so please phone or email me and I wil be happy to help.
I hope you have enjoyed my first blog, and I look forward to letting you know all the news and information about Uncle Henry’s in the coming twelve months and if you do come into the shop or cafe, please say hello and let me know what you think or you can email me at marketing@unclehenrys.co.uk or phone 01652 640308.
